Our goal is to raise $20,000 to keep us on the road to OPENING THE PAULI MURRAY CENTER IN 2020. We need more monuments honoring women, people of color and LGBTQ folks.
Less than 2% of our National Parks, Monuments, and Historic Sites are dedicated to women's history, less than 6% focus on African American history and less than 1% explore the stories of members of the LGBTQ community. We're going to turn those numbers around with the Pauli Murray Center, our award-winning National Historic Landmark site. Pauli Murray's story of resilience as an activist, lawyer, educator, poet, and priest is now more relevant than ever.
And So We are Taking Pauli On-the-Road in 2018!
Our Exhibit - Pauli Murray: Imp, Crusader, Dude, Priest, will travel to St. Paul's Chapel, Trinity Wall Street Episcopal Church in New York City where from February 27 – March 20, 2018 it will be open and free to the public.
Our Play - To Buy the Sun: The Challenge of Pauli Murray, created with Hidden Voices, will be performed at St. Paul's Chapel in New York from April 5-7 and then at Yale's Pauli Murray College in New Haven from April 12-15, 2018.
Pauli Murray (1910-1985) was an extraordinary individual. While her legacy is deep and far-reaching in justice movements in this country, she herself has been mostly unheralded. Despite discrimination as African-American woman and lesbian descended from both former slaves and slave owners, Ms. Murray become a pioneering civil rights attorney, activist, writer, and priest. Her work challenged discrimination in legal, societal, academic and religious circles. Learn more about Pauli Murray here.
In 2016 we completed the exterior renovation of the historic house and we are poised to begin on the interior with a major grant from the National Park Service. With your help we will renovate the house next door as our Welcome Center, hire staff and gear up to formally open the PMC in 2020.
